Information and Help for JSTOR databases

JSTOR databases include:

  • Arts & Sciences Collections I, II, III, IV, and Complement

Tips/hints/features:

  • After you have logged in, click on the EYE icon or the word SEARCH in the center of the screen to begin searching. Do not click on or be misled by the links at the top that say " Log In | Athens Log In | Options for Access to JSTOR." You don't need to do any of that.
  • On the basic and advanced search screens, un-check the box labeled "Search for links to articles outside of JSTOR." You do not want to do that.
  • The primary purpose of JSTOR is to provide deep backfiles (that is, older issues) of journals for in-depth research requiring background information.
  • Contents: The JSTOR archive contains the full text of scholarly journals, beginning with the very first year/issue of each title. There is a gap, typically from 1 to 5 years, between the most recently published journal issue and the text available through JSTOR. For example, the text of American Journal of Philology is provided from 1880 until recent issues (but not the past few years). In addition to the full text available in the JSTOR archive, you are also able to search and browse the citations (title, author, and abstract) for more recent issues of select titles. If you desire the text of these items, they may be available, full text, from another TROY-provided database, or via interlibrary loan. If you desire the text of an article which is not provided within JSTOR, and you are not sure how to locate it in another database or cannot find it in another database, please contact your Library staff.
  • SEARCH: On the Basic Search screen you have a box in which to enter your term. For a keyword search, use a term that fits your topic. The subsequent search compares your search terms with every word in the body of the articles and in the citation information. Below the box are Quick Tips indicating how to search for the title of a particular article or for articles by a particular author. Note that you should place multi-word keyword phrases, authors’ names, and article titles in quotation marks, so that the whole phrase is searched, rather than the individual words. Advanced Search or Expert Search both offer additional, more specific ways to find articles. The directions on the respective pages are explicit and easy to follow. Click here for more information on Basic and Advanced searching.
  • Besides the basic and advanced search screens, there is the Article Locator. Use the Article Locator to find a specific article which you know to be available from one of the JSTOR databases.
