MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE (Biology, Geology, Chemistry, Physics) <back to choose database menu>

Which ones do I use?

Scroll down for descriptions and help files.

ALWAYS A GOOD START: The AccessScience database provides information from The McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology, and is an excellent resource for all scientific topics. Environment Complete is a recent edition (Fall 2007) to the database collection and is also a great place to start.

BOOKS: Refer to the Books section of this site <click here>.

GENERAL TOPICS: Students in General Studies science courses often write papers on basic topics such as "How do earthquakes work?" These types of papers are usually best researched in databases other than the ones listed in this section, the contents of which is frequently too narrowly focused for such topics. For general topics, you may be served best by a multidisciplinary, social science, business, history, or general database. Specifically

  • General/Multidisciplinary databases: General OneFile and ProQuest [All combined].
  • Social science: Academic OneFile, Academic Search Complete, Expanded Academic ASAP, and Research Library.
  • Business: ABI/Inform Complete, Business Source Premier and General BusinessFile ASAP
  • History: History Reference Center and World History Collection
History? Yes! If you need biographical information about a mathematician, a history of volcanic eruptions, or things of that nature, a history database may be an excellent resource.
  • General: Encyclopedia Britannica, Funk & Wagnall's New World Encyclopedia, and Oxford Reference Online Premium
SERIOUS RESEARCH: A few of the databases in this section do provide full text articles—specifically, ACS Web (Chemistry), BioOne (Biology), Environment Complete, and MathSciNet (Mathematics). Others provide indexing to articles that while not full text may be available via interlibrary loan. In either case, the vast majority of material that is provided will be decidedly scientific in nature.
