TO ACCESS RESERVES:

• Reserves are accessed online at http://troyst.docutek.com.
• After you have taken that link, click the link labeled Electronic Reserves and Course Materials.
• In the box labeled Select an Instructor, select your instructor’s name and click on Go.
• Click on the course name that comes up.
• To access the material, enter the password that your instructor has given you.

ASSISTANCE AND TECHNICAL NOTES:

• Assistance: If you require assistance accessing reserves, please contact the Library.
• Technical notes: The following are two items to keep in mind when accessing reserves online.
  • PDF - Portable Document Format: Many of the items on reserve take the form of a PDF (Portable Document Format) file that requires Adobe Reader (software) to view. You can obtain the software, free of charge, from the Adobe WWW site at http://www.adobe.com.
  • Viewers: In the event that lecture notes or other instructor-created reserve items are provided in a format which you are unable to open, e.g., Microsoft Word, the following resources can assist you:
    • Microsoft Office Converters and Viewers http://www.microsoft.com/office/000/viewers.asp. These resources are available at no cost.
  • Cookies. The online reserve system does not write permanent cookies to your computer. However, in order to access reserves, cookies must be enabled. Here are instructions for enabling cookies:

    Internet Explorer 5.x
    Go to Tools: Internet Options: Security
    Click custom settings
    Scroll down until you see cookies and change both to "enable all cookies"
    Click apply then OK

    Netscape 4.x
    Click on Edit: Preferences: Advanced
    Choose "Accept all cookies"
    Click OK

Faculty Guide to eReserves

Troy University Library has implemented a system by which class materials may be placed on reserve in electronic format for student access. Items that may be placed on reserve include lecture notes, government publications, exams, articles, or portions of books. This service is intended for traditional classes and those taught via the Internet. Students will have 24 hours a day access to the posted documents through the Troy Electronic Reserve Center, with an instructor provided password.

Procedures for setting up an account and copyright compliance information are available at https://library.troy.edu/html/eres_info.html. Copyright permission is obtained through Copyright Clearance Center. If copyright clearance is required, there will be a per page charge times the number of students in your class, plus a $3 administration fee. (The number of students in the class is initially provided as an estimate. Within a short time after the class begins, the actual number should be submitted to CCC, and the invoice will be revised.) This process requires 4-6 weeks of lead time so that items will be ready for the beginning of the term. Access to the reserves must be arranged and fees will be charged term by term. Materials to be placed on electronic reserves may be supplied either in electronic format or clear, legible print.

Articles that are available through the Troy University Online Library will not be placed on electronic reserve.

Class materials may be posted on Blackboard. However, Fair Use, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, and the TEACH Act should all be observed when supplying class content through Blackboard.

Many materials may be posted without copyright permission. However, in the case of items 4, 5, 6, and 7, formal copyright permission is a safeguard.
1. class notes
2. student papers (with student’s permission, for privacy considerations)
3. government publications
4. a single article from an issue of a journal (one article per issue)
5. a single chapter from a book
6. one short story, essay or poem from a collected work
7. short excerpt, not to exceed 10% of the total, of a work which is not divided into chapters or articles
8. material for which the instructor owns the copyright
9. works in the public domain

Electronic Reserve materials for which copyright permission must be requested:
1. an article from a journal needed by a professor for more than one term
2. multiple articles from the same journal issue
3. one chapter of a book needed by a professor for more than one term
4. multiple chapters of a book
5. an out of print book

The policy governing the current electronic reserves service is based on the provisions of fair use as stated by the US Copyright Act of 1976. Section 107 expressly permits the making of multiple copies for classroom use, however, it does not provide for wholesale copying and distribution of copyrighted works for any purpose, education or otherwise. The law provides standards which must be applied in each case to evaluate whether the proposed use falls within the limited exemption of fair use.
