CP6644 Community Resources. Under construction (Pardon the dust). Updated 11/29/07
NOTE: This a "working page" for a specific university course, it is not intended to be anything more than that, i.e., it is not intended to be any sort of guide to to subjects listed, so please do not use it as such. The purpose of these listings is to assist students in this course in identifying local (community) resources and/or seeing how a practitioner might use a national organization's Web site to identify resources in their local community.
Example of how this guide may be used: Under the subject heading Shelters is a link to a Web site, Shelters.org, that can be used to locate shelters by state and city. Students in this course are able to see how a counselor might use that site to find a shelter in their geographical area.
For each topic there are links to one or more organizations that are likely to provide useful information to those in a community counseling setting; nevertheless, as each individual site was not thoroughly investigated, this may not always be the case.
INDEX (below) Bold-faced items have completed entries (below the index), the others do not. The following is a list of some of the topics that will added to this page as time goes by. If you find good resources on a topic, please e-mail them to jayb777@troy.edu - Mr. Jay Brandes. Remember, you are NOT looking for Web sites "about" a topic--what you want are sites that can be used to identify local (community) resources. Two places to look for such sites are Open Directory http://dmoz.org and the Yahoo! directory http://dir.yahoo.com. NOTE THAT The address of the Yahoo! directory is NOT the same as the Yahoo! search engine; the directory works like a yellow pages--that is the place to look (not yahoo.com).
Suggestions? If you want to help, please let Mr. Brandes know which headings you are working on before you start so that he does not duplicate your work. Remember, Web sites must be useful as a community (local) resource, e.g., they should direct users to services in geographical areas. They should not just provide information about a topic or offer an online service.

SHELTERS Editor's notes: While the Shelters.org index isn't "too bad," it is not even remotely comprehensive. The Yahoo! listing is an example of a bad index for this subject in that it has very few listings--it is included to demonstrate the shortcomings of the Internet as a tool for researching some subjects. In this case, a practitioners best bet for finding local shelters is by other means, e.g., the telephone yellow pages.
